Google Goggles. Making fun of Google Goggles. Fashionware for enjoying The Avengers 3D (even if the only superhero you had previous knowledge of was The Hulk). And now, Truth Goggles.
PolitiFact’s Truth Googles (check out this demo), allow users to fact check claims made by politicians and the media. Interesting in itself, it also is an interesting concept to teaching critical thinking skills to students.
Imagine a tool like this that allowed students to analyze the truthiness of material. Where students can question assumptions and see either the factual basis or the competing opinions (or both), and assess not only how “facts” may be represented, but also how they may have been cherry picked to make specific points.
Yes, that is generally called research. But this is a good use of technology to facilitate the application of critical thinking skills.
